For all you cat lovers and canine keepers, just skip to the next page because you will loathe this article.
But I must take a stand on an urgent matter. I am dogmatic that I will never own a pet and neither should you.
I didn't always have this view on our furry companions. I grew up loving two purrrfect cats.
However, a disastrous event from this weekend made me resolute in my conclusion.
I work for a local flower shop, and one of my main jobs is deliveries. I detest delivering to houses that have dogs that roam free. It is inevitable that at least five dogs will swarm the delivery van and jump all over me while I am carrying a large bouquet and balloons.
This was the scenario I faced on Saturday while making a routine delivery. Five dogs were there to greet me as I pulled up the driveway of a large house on the edge of town.
I managed to maneuver past them enough to hand off the flowers and finally get back to the safety of the delivery van.
I discovered I was sporting a few new muddy paw prints on my legs. But nevertheless I began to gingerly reverse out of the long driveway since the dogs were still swarming the van.
I thought I was finally in the clearing as I made it to the main road and started onto the next delivery. But then the horrific tragedy struck. I froze in my seat.
It was the worse possible situation multiplied by a million. I had just hit and killed my customer's dog. It wasn't just any dog either; it was a dog easily worth a couple thousand dollars.
After reflecting on the day of having to tell my customer I just ran over their dog and watching them carry the lifeless pet back to the house with the family crying, I came to my conclusion-I will not have pets.
I understand all the reasoning for having pets. They provide companionship and teach responsibility to children etc.
But I am here to contend for no pets. Think about it. Sure pets provide companionship, but what happens when they die? Especially for children, the trauma caused by pets dying is worse than just living with out a furry companion.
