Baseball picked tenth

The SBU Bearcats were picked for 10th in the 2010 MIAA Baseball Coaches Poll, the conference office announced Friday. Two-time defending MIAA champion and 2009 NCAA Division II national runner-up Emporia State was selected as preseason number one.
The baseball Bearcats of coach Sam Berg received 18 points, ahead of Truman, who were 11th with 11 points. Pittsburg State was 9th with 30 points. SBU begins the 2010 campaign on Friday, February 5 at 2 p.m. in Durant, Okla., for a three-game series with Southeastern Oklahoma. SBU's first home games are scheduled for February 16 in a doubleheader against Rockhurst starting at noon.
The ESU Hornets received nine of 11 first place votes and totaled 99 points to get the nod. Emporia State won the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship in 2009 and advanced to the national championship game before falling just short against Lynn, 2-1. ESU was also voted preseason number one in the nation by the "Collegiate Baseball Newspaper."
Central Missouri collected the other two first-place votes and was voted #2 in the coaches poll with a total of 91 points. The Mules advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional championship game last season before falling to Emporia State. Central Missouri is #11 in the preseason national poll.
SBU finished 9-41, 7-31 in the MIAA in 2009. The Bearcats return eight starters including OF Kyle Wise, 3B Justin Barnhart and LHP Greg Seay. Wise led the team with 36 RBI and hit .302 while Barnhart led the team with 17 stolen bases. Seay led the 'Cats with 52 strikeouts.
