Southwest Baptist University department of music will host the 36th annual Church Music Workshop Feb. 4-6.
The workshop is created for full and part-time church music leadership and accompanists. Leading a selection of sessions are Robert Sterling, Dr. Duncan Couch, Jeff Bennett and John Francis.
Sterling is a Dove Award winning songwriter, arranger and record producer. His songs have climbed in Christian radio charts and have been recorded by a variety of artists including Point of Grace, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers and Sandi Patty. Sterling has served as the chairman of the Coalition for the Protection of America's Gospel Music Heritage and taught as an adjunct professor of music publishing at Belmont University in Nashville.
Couch served as Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Director of Choral Activities at SBU for nine years in the 1970s. Following this, Couch served as music faculty at the University of Missouri, Columbia and at Stetson University, where he was appointed Professor Emeritus. He was the founding director of the Kansas City All-Metro Choir and has conducted festival choirs and orchestra in concerts in New York City's Carnegie Hall. He currently serves as the interim chorus master for the Tampa Bay Master Chorale.
Bennett's writing and recordings have made him a respected pianist, arranger and recording artist with every major publisher in the country. He has performed on a recording for Disney and has arranged for artists including Marvin Hamlisch. During the year he leads Master Classes and performs throughout the U.S.
Francis is the worship specialist with the Missouri Baptist Convention and is the executive director of the Missouri Music Men. Francis' trumpet playing has been featured in recordings and films such as "Gettysburg."
Thursday evening the SBU Chorale and Orchestra with the Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra of First Baptist Church will perform "The Choral Music of Robert Sterling" 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist.
The Missouri Music Men, under the direction of Francis, will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Meyer Recital Hall. The concert will also include music from Sterling, Bennett and Francis.
