Intrigue, suspense, humor, entertainment and action: this is just a short list of what audiences can expect from the movie "Sherlock Holmes," now in theatres.
Robert Downey Jr. plays the legendary detective as he struggles through one of his most challenging cases. His friend and companion, Dr. James Watson (played by Jude Law), helps Holmes as he tries to make sense out of the senseless.
The movie opens with Holmes catching serial killer and occult leader Lord Blackwood (played by Mark Strong). Having captured his nemesis, Holmes along with Watson can successfully close another case. Soon Holmes is called to the scene of an unexpected twist--Blackwood has returned from the grave after being hung and Holmes is given the task of capturing Blackwood once again.
Holmes not only has to work with the dim head of Scotland Yard, but has to realize that Watson's time is now devoted to his fiancée (played by Kelly Reilly). Irene Adler (played by Rachel McAdams), known as "the woman" to Holmes, returns to London trying to outsmart him once again as the plot thickens.
The movie is full of twists and turns in the plot. Holmes, Watson and Adler work together to try to save not only themselves but the state of the country as well. The action sequences bring intensity to the dark London setting. Guy Richie does a surprising job directing this hit and proves that he shouldn't just be known as an ex-husband of Madonna.
Downey does a wonderful job in his role as the disguised detective and won the best actor Golden Globe Award for a musical or comedy. Law, although at first seemed a misfit for the role of Watson, shows that he is as talented as the rest of the cast in his role. Law is fantastic at being the sound advice giver Watson is. McAdams and Downey have prolonged chemistry as they keep viewers guessing as the extent of their relationship throughout the movie. Adler is not only beautiful but becomes threatening as Holmes gets closer to cracking the case. Strong continuously portrays the dark and evil Blackwood in a way that gives audiences chills throughout the movie.
