Chelsea Strahm, the daughter of Al and Debbie Strahm, is an important asset to Southwest Baptist University women's cross country and track team. The senior from St. Joseph started her track career in 9th grade.
"I started cross country my junior year of high school to get in better for track," said Strahm.
In high school Strahm was a four-sport athlete in volleyball, cross country, basketball, and track.
"I have played volleyball, basketball, and softball since I was little," said Strahm.
Strahm was also involved in Young Life throughout all four years of high school.
"I am a competitive person, said Strahm. "I like good competition."
Strahm's competitive nature has helped her gain success in athletics. Strahm earned All-State honors for cross country in 2004 and 2005.
In 2005 Strahm also received All-State honors for the 3200 meter-run in track.
Strahm excels in long distance and track events which include the 1500 meter-run, 3k, 5k, 6k, and steeple chase. Notably, in 2008 Strahm earned All-Conference honors for the distance medley relay team during indoor track, the steeple chase in outdoor, and cross country in the fall. One of Strahm's strongest events is the steeple chase during the outdoor track season. The event is 3000-meters and includes five wooden hurdles with a water pit.
In 2008 Strahm made the provisional mark for nationals in the event.
"My goal is to qualify for nationals in the steeple chase," said Strahm.
Strahm will graduate next May with a degree in recreation.
"I want to work with senior citizens and incorporate recreation," said Strahm.
Strahm is grateful for all the support in her life.
"I love my roommate who has been there for four years," Strahm said.
She is also thankful for senior Shawn Etzenhouser, "He has been the best twin brother anyone could ask for."
"My mom has influenced me the most," said Strahm. "She has always worked hard and helped me a lot. She always supports me in everything I do."
Strahm has one more year of eligibility for indoor and outdoor track; it will be no surprise to see her at nationals.
