This semester has been quite the ride for the sports world on campus. We began the semester with a men's basketball team ranked in the top-10 in the entire nation, and they improved their ranking each and every week. All the while, the women's basketball team battled on the edge of making the MIAA tournament with every game, and the baseball team began their season with a modest start, around .500. Softball proved they were in it to win it, and the track team sent five athletes to nationals and returned all five as All-Americans. Coach John Bryant led the tennis team and they did what they always have done at SBU - win matches.
So let us take a few moments and recollect all that SBU has done this semester.
The men's basketball team ended their season with a total record of 26-5 and 17-3 in the MIAA. Head Coach Jeff Guiot was named 'Coach of the Year' and the team advanced all the way to the regional tournament championship game. Junior Matt Rogers was named MIAA MVP and earned All-American honors. Overall, the men's basketball season was one of the best for SBU -- not an easy thing to say considering their history under the leadership of Coach Guiot.
Head Coach JC Carter put the women's basketball team in the MIAA tournament in his first year as head coach of the program. SBU ended the season 5-15 in the conference. Senior Courtney Creed earned honorable mention in the conference and helped SBU overcome the nationally ranked Hornets at Emporia State University in the upset of the year, 86-73.
Some All-American trophies fell into the arms of several track and field athletes this year. Head Coach Corey McElhaney and Assistant Coach Ranard Adkison accompanied their All-Americans: graduate student Sarah Bowling, sophomore Nathaniel Rogers, juniors Shawn Etzenhouser, Jeremy Glassmaker and senior Michael Pierce to the event held in Houston, Texas. The men's DMR team finished second in the nation.
The men's baseball team began the year 7-10, but could only come up with two more victories during the season and finished 9-41, 7-31 in conference play. The record includes a 19-game losing streak which ran from March 14 until April 16. Junior Justin Barnhart was named CoSIDA Academic All-District first team.
A no-hitter by sophomore Josie Rose was one of several highlights from the SBU softball team. Head Coach Christy Capner did all she could to ensure the girls would get a chance to play in the MIAA tournament. The open spot came down to the last game and SBU was unable to seal the deal. They finished the '09 campaign 23-35.
Junior Marton Zsiga was named MIAA MVP in tennis after winning 15 of his 22 matches and four out of five in conference play. The men's tennis team finished second in the MIAA regional tournament, losing to Washburn University in the final match.
SBU golfers finished sixth in the MIAA tournament. Junior Brad Nipper led the team with his 13th place finish in the tournament recording a three-round score of 229 (75-77-77).
The SBU athletics have earned themselves many successes in the spring; come see the Bearcats this fall.
