It was a hot and humid defeat for the Bearcats as they fell in the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Tournament held last week in Austin, Texas.
For the third time in the 2009 season, Washburn University was able to nudge out a victory over the SBU men's tennis team.
It was similar to the previous two match-ups, as all three came down to the final match.
The match-up against the Bearcat's conference foes again proved the importance of doubles play.
As in their previous match ups, Washburn was able to come away with a win in two of the three doubles matches. Each team won three singles matches giving the Ichabods the upper hand.
This time, as in the MIAA championship match, it was up to freshman Jorge Palacios. Despite an unbelievable comeback in the second set where Palacios battled from a 5-2 deficit, Washburn's number five player was able to capture the third set and ultimately end SBU's season.
Notably, both of SBU's seniors won their final matches as Bearcats.
Despite the losses of the two talented seniors, Emilio El Alabi, and Agustin Mollar, SBU should continue their success as Coach Bryant allowed three freshmen to compete this season in hopes to develop their talent further and improve the team for the 2010 season.
This marks the end of tennis for the 2009 season; the Bearcats finish with a respectable 15-9 overall record and an appearance on the national stage.
