Southwest Baptist took six determined track and field athletes to the Emporia State ATG Sports Twilight Qualifier this past weekend, returning with success.
In the sport of track, an athlete who is teetering on the bubble of a trip to the national track meet or staying home can test their skills in a "last chance meet" which takes place on the last weekend to qualify for the national meet.
Graduate student Sarah Bowling improved her mark in the triple jump taking first place in the meet with a leap of 39 feet, 6.5 inches which now ranks her 6th in the nation. She also participated in the long jump but barely missed provisional, taking third after a jump of 18 feet, 5 inches.
Junior sprinter Jenny Blair, coming off of a spectacular weekend at the MIAA conference meet where she claimed the conference title in the 200-meters, took 2nd place in the 200-meters and 3rd in the 400-meters with times of 25.12 and 57.44 respectively.
Fellow junior sprinter Jennifer Gillespie captured a provisional time in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 2.61 seconds.
Junior Jeremy Glassmaker, who provisionally qualified in the 1500-meter run earlier in the season, took 1st place in the meet with an impressive time of 3:54.36. The time failed to improve his provisional time of 3:52.11 which he set with his third place finish at the conference meet.
Senior Robert Barrow placed second in the 200-meter dash with a 22.14 second showing, and senior Vince Tichenor stepped off the track for the last time after a 1:55.05 800-meter run.
The athletes who qualified for the national event will head to San Angelo, Texas next weekend. The final list of those who qualified was not available at the time of publication.
