School records in both indoor and outdoor track, multiple MIAA all-conference medals, and plenty of memories are only a smattering of the accomplishments senior Jeff Weseloh will hold in his possession after his last season with the Bearcats.
Weseloh grew up in Liberty Mo. and came to Southwest Baptist due to the recruiting of former track coach, Jeff DeLong and a friend who highly recommended the school. Weseloh is now double-majoring in marketing and management and plans to graduate this December. Afterwards, he plans to stay at SBU and enroll in the MBA program.
Weseloh's favorite thing about being a Bearcat is the track team.
"The team has developed into a family since I came here freshman year," said Weseloh. "It makes going to practice more enjoyable."
His first love in running track and field will no longer be a weekend activity. Weseloh stepped off the track for the last time after the MIAA conference outdoor track meet in Joplin.
Weseloh has set several individual records for SBU and was part of a relay team which holds a school record. He set the 400-meter indoor and outdoor track records, the 600-yard indoor record, and was part of the school record-breaking 4x400 meter relay this year. He currently holds both 400-meter records, and the 4x400 meter relay team record. Weseloh has also raked in several all-conference medals in both indoor and outdoor track throughout his four year career at Southwest Baptist.
One of his favorite track memories was the 4x400-meter relay at the indoor conference track meet last season.
"No one expected for us to finish second in that race," said Weseloh. "The night before coach told us that a lot of the teams did not think SBU belonged there, but we showed that SBU can compete."
During his freshman year, Weseloh endured some tough love on the track courtesy of now current head track coach, Corey McElhaney. Weseloh recalls that during "freshman year, we were supposed to race, but the meet was cancelled, so we came back to school and Coach DeLong had us run a 600-meter time trial. Coach wanted me to pace Corey through the first 400 and [Corey] came up to me and said something along the lines of, 'This is not a joke; take it seriously. I am in the best shape of my life,' which scared me to death."
However, Weseloh did pace Corey through the 400. He raced the quickest 400-meter in his freshman year.
Now 'Corey' is the head track and cross country coach, and Weseloh has nothing but respect and love for him. "He is definitely the right man for the job," said Weseloh. "A lot of success that we have in cross country and in track can be credited to him."
