Freshman Krystal Kerb narrowly escaped death last Friday.
Kerb was in David Pulliam's 1994 Chevrolet Camaro in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center's parking lot when a tree was broken by the winds and fell onto the car, crushing the cab.
"I parked his car there because it was raining so hard, it was raining too hard for me to see where I was going…The wind was blowing really hard, all the sudden I felt a bump on my head," said Kerb.
The tree crushed the cab of the car, remarkably Kerb escaped with only minor injuries.
"I didn't see it coming and I didn't hear it coming at all," said Kerb.
Kerb escaped the crushed vehicle by crawling out of the passenger window.
"Id like to give God the glory… that's the reason I think I got out OK… he really deserves the credit," said Kerb.
Across the street athletic training students saw the event happen.
"People from the athletic department came out and helped me," said Kerb. "Thank you to everyone who prayed for me and all the trainers who helped."
[Morgan Simpson] drove me to the hospital… they took some x-rays and I didn't have broken bones or have to have stitches, so they just cleaned me up."
"We called the ambulance and they checked her out…I took her over to the hospital at her request," said Morgan Simpson, Director of the CMH Sports Medicine Center.
Since the ambulance was on emergency status, it visited Kerb, and after her injuries were determined to be non-life threatening the ambulance left to attend to other calls around Bolivar.
Kerb's close call came the same day that two people, Grover and Wanda Neeley, were killed when a tree fell on their car on Rt. 53.
President C. Pat Taylor issued a statement later on Friday and commended SBU students.
SBU employed its First Alert System at 8 a.m. to warn students of the dangerous storm.
SBU sustained damage from the storm, the worst from flash flooding as water filled the first floor of Roseman Apartments.
