Road trips are a fabulous way students can relax after a long semester. They can be extensively planned or spontaneous, allowing the driver to drive in whatever direction for as much time as desired.
There are several key points mentioned on Roadtrip America's website to keep in mind when you are ready to jump in the car with some friends and enjoy the ride.
The trip must have a purpose of some sort. Once you answer the question about why you are taking the trip, you can estimate how much time the planning will require. If you have some goals for the trip some detailed planning might be necessary.
The second pointer is to know your style and those who are going with you. If you are spontaneous and ready to go anywhere on a whim and your friends enjoy some structure it might be necessary to sit down and have some plan in place to accommodate everyone involved.
Make sure that you have extensively researched the areas where you will drive through. Online sites give a variety of information and can point out information regarding local attractions, must sees and hotels. Another possibility is to request vacation information through state agencies through the mail. Once the research is gathered it is time to plan the trip. Make sure the route you will take is safe and that you will have the finances needed to take it.
Before you head out, make sure that the vehicle is in proper running order. Make sure the oil has been changed, the tires inflated and any necessary precautions have been taken. If there is a problem with the vehicle make sure to get it fixed before you head out or you may find yourself stranded.
While on the trip, make sure the car has a comfortable feel. Bring music and maybe even audio books that will enhance the experience. Make sure that you allow your friends to have some say on the stops; when and where they will take place. It's easier to have fun when there isn't any tension from disagreements.
During the trip, plan on keeping some form of journal that will help you continue to remember the trip after it has occurred. Photographs, writings and even souvenirs are great ways to create memories.
Last but not least, be flexible and enjoy the ride. Although plans are created, it is usually safe to say that they won't all come off without a hitch. The greatest part of a road trip is the twist in plan as you get on the open road.
