The Southwest Baptist men and women's tennis teams had a busy Easter weekend, busy in competition. Each team crushed Emporia State without losing a match on Friday, however the men and women both fell to Washburn the following day.
The #21 ranked Bearcats handily defeated Emporia State without much of a fight. Junior Marton Zsiga won 6-1, 6-0, and senior Emilio El Alabi, last weeks MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week, took care of his opponent 6-0, 6-3. SBU confidently held Emporia to only seven games in singles play. Senior Agustin Mollar won in straight sets and allowed Tyler Zappia from ESU only three games. Freshman Jorge Margiotta handled his business, winning 6-0 and 6-0.
The women's tennis team had a similar result against ESU, winning 7-0. Juniors Jolee Cook and Johanna Olsson again led the Bearcats to victory. Each won their singles match and combining for a doubles victory. Sweeping doubles was huge for SBU, something they have been working hard on all season.
After a successful day against Emporia, SBU had a tough outing against Washburn University. The men fell 5-4 in a battle from start to finish, and the women were able to win one match as they lost 7-1. Sophomore Sarah Sentlinger, the #5 women's player, was able to pull out a marathon victory in three sets.
The SBU men now sit at 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA, while the women fall to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference standings.
