The University's department of Language and Literature is sponsoring the annual Writing Contest, and students have until 4 p.m. Monday, March 16 to submit works in six categories: poetry, short story, one-act play, non-documented essay and critical literary essay. Students may submit works in multiple categories, however they may not submit more than three entries in poetry and one entry in each of the other categories. Submissions should be no longer than 3,000 words and each submission must have a word count at the top of the page. Submissions must be typed, and critical literary essays must use MLA style. Works must by free of profanity, obscenity and vulgarity in language and content. Writers will remain anonymous during judging and winners will be announced in an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. Monday, April 20 in the Davis-Newport Theatre in Jester Learning and Performance Center. Winning entries will receive cash prizes and will appear "Scop," the literary journal of the department of Language and Literature. Last year's winners include graduate Brian Anderson with his short story "Laying it Out on the Table," sophomore Ryan Butler with his personal narrative "Spontaneity in Action," Anderson with his poem "Chanticleer's Elegy," senior Theresa Lochhas with her non-fiction piece "Seeing the Elephant" and Butler with his critical literary analysis "The Shepherd of the Hills: Proclaiming a Moral Message."
