The Lady Bearcat soccer team participated in a warm-up scrimmage against Drury University, allowing the ladies to fine-tune their skills. The soccer team is currently ranked fifth in the MIAA. However Head Coach Benjamin Wade would rather not have his team think they are favorites.
" To be honest I'd much rather begin the season ranked in the middle of the pack and finish at the top- than to be ranked at the top, and finish in the middle," said Wade.
Last season SBU's soccer team was a finalist for the MIAA tournament. During that season our team went 9-8-3 overall.
In Wade's mind there are a few keys to a successful season.
"The number one thing to know about this team concerns our returning starters," said Wade. "We only have one player (number 21, Sr. Aude Lechat) who will be starting in the same position as last season. We'll be trying many different schemes, combinations, and formations to find the right chemistry."
Before their opening game on August 28, Coach Wade said, "I'm excited about our match with Oakland City. Everyone's looking forward to getting our season going with a very good Bearcats team."
This "very good Bearcats team" includes MIAA Women's Soccer player of the week: Freshman Rhiane Mitchell. The Bearcats made a statement their first game, with resounding 11-0 victory over Oakland City in which Mitchell scored five goals and one assist. Their next game will be at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 3, in Rolla, against Missouri S&T. Come support our Lady Bearcats.
