Southwest Baptist University students showcased their talent for writing Monday, April 7 in Davis-Newport Theatre during the 2008 Writing Contest awards night.
Students were encouraged throughout the semester to submit entries into the Writing Contest's six categories: short story, personal narrative, poetry, non-fiction, critical literary analysis and one-act play. The contest was anonymous and entries were judged by English department faculty.
Before the winners were announced, leading contenders in each category read their entries for the audience.
Each category had a runner-up and a winner. The runner-ups received a medallion and $10 prize. Winners won a plaque and $20 prize.
The runner-up in short story was junior Randall Stirewalt with his short story "Untitled." The winner in the short story category was senior Brian Anderson with his story "Laying it Out on the Table."
In personal narrative Anderson was runner up with "Alarm Clock Woes," and freshman Ryan Butler won with his personal narrative "Spontaneity in Action."
The runner-up in poetry was junior Krista Juliff and her poem "My Mom."
Anderson won the poetry contest with his poem "Chanticleer's Elegy."
In non-fiction, junior Theresa Lochhas won for her piece "Seeing the Elephant."
In critical literary analysis, Anderson was the runner-up with his "Analytical Book Review of Schansberg's Turn Neither to the Right nor to the Left," and Butler won with his "The Shepherd of the Hills: Proclaiming a Moral Message."
Senior Renee Johnson was the runner-up in the one-act play category with her play "Chicago Sundown," and senior Charlotte Holman won with her play "The Understanding."
All of the winning entries will be featured in this year's edition of SCOP, the Language and Literature Department's literary journal, which is printed in May.
