In efforts to improve Southwest Baptist University, two strategic planning committees were formed in 2007 and met together to develop seven initiatives that directly relate to the University's mission and vision.
Each initiative has specific goals to support its achievement. In the March 7 issue of The Omnibus, an article listed each initiative and detailed the organization of the committees.
The first initiative is to "Promote a Christ-Centered University."
The strategic planning committee chose this particular initiative because of the dedication SBU has to be Christ-centered in all areas of university life.
The initiative states, "It is the University's desire to elevate Christian distinctiveness in all areas of the curriculum, student life, athletics and relationships with constituents. All faculty and staff have the responsibility of modeling a Christian lifestyle for students and our community."
The University Planning Advisory Council was formed and split into subcommittees to develop plans for SBU to have a starting point on each initiative. Each subcommittee met together during the fall 2007 semester.
The Initiative One Committee consisted of two faculty members, two staff members and one student.
According to Rob Harris, dean of students and member of this committee, the individuals "were assigned the task of concentrating on one or more of the five goals established under Initiative One and were asked to formulate a recommendation that would include the 2008-2009 Initiative One objectives,"
This committee developed an action plan involving one particular goal of Initiative One. The committee chose to focus on building "an endowment fund in order to provide financial support for mission trip participants."
SBU alumna Kristen Blinzler served on this committee while she held the position of Student Government Association Vice President. Blinzler said that the committee chose the third goal instead of one of the remaining four because it encompassed all of the areas the goals focused on.
