The 2008 Writing Contest, sponsored by Southwest Baptist University's Department of Language and Literature, is underway with six categories students can compete in for cash prizes.
Students can submit works in the categories of poetry, short story, one-act play, nonfiction, personal narrative or critical literary essay.
A personal narrative is an essay describing some aspect of the author's life. A critical literary essay analyzes a work of literature with the help of sources and research. A nonfiction essay is any essay that does not fit into the categories of critical literary essay or personal narrative.
Any student enrolled for the spring 2008 semester at SBU can enter the contest. Students may enter pieces in multiple categories, but only three entries are allowed in the poetry category and one entry in the other categories.
All submissions should be within the limit of 3,000 words. The Department of Language and Literature asks that there be no profanity in works submitted to the writing contest.
The deadline for the writing contest is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, and entries may be submitted to members of the English faculty or at the Writing Center.
The winners will be announced at an awards program at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 7 in the Davis-Newport Theatre in Jester Learning Center. The awards program will also include readings from several works that are being considered for first, second and third place.
Winners will receive cash prizes and the honor of winning. Anyone is welcome to attend the awards program and listen to the readings of pieces by SBU students.
Last year, SBU graduate Bri Scott won first place in the categories of poetry, one-act play and personal essay. Senior Charlotte Holman took home the first place prize in short story and senior Jessica Stone won first place in critical essay.
