Throughout the month of January the southeast corner of the Southwest Baptist University campus has been the home of a unique memorial.
The 400 white crosses at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Aldrich Road were placed as a vivid reminder to onlookers of the 48,000,000 lives lost because of abortion since 1973.
Construction and placement of the little white crosses was a collaborative effort of Southern Hills Baptist Church, First Assembly of God Church and Mid-Lakes Baptist Association.
According to Gary Urich, pastor of Southern Hills Baptist Church, the three organizations have been working together for a couple of years to increase awareness in Bolivar about abortion and the surrounding area.
The crosses were placed in January as a reminder of the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Roe vs. Wade, which was decided on January 22, 1973.
The Supreme Court overruled a Texas law that made abortion a crime.
The court believed the Texas law infringed upon women's right to privacy, which is protected under the 14th amendment of the United States Constitution.
The Supreme Court could not conclusively decide when a life began during pregnancy. The court ruled that a baby was not considered living until it could survive outside the womb, which is possible after seven months of pregnancy.
Any abortion before this point in the pregnancy was deemed legal.
The two Bolivar churches and area association hope the crosses have had an impact. "They have been a great way to start conversations, especially with my children," said Rhonda Middleton, director of Alpha House.
The 400 crosses magnify the seriousness of the abortion problem in the United States.
Urich believes America will begin to see negative consequences due to the lack of moral standard and character if changes are not made.
