With the semester in full swing and homecoming just around the corner, Dorm Olympic competitions are also in full swing.
The Iron Man / Iron Woman Contest took place on Monday, Sept. 18 (rescheduled from Monday, Sept. 11 due to the high level of chlorine in the University pool) along with the dorm vs. dorm mud tug o% war contest.
The Iron Man / Iron Woman Contest was a triathlon race consisting of: swimming, distance running and bicycling. The race began with a five cycle swimming race (five cycles or two-and-a-half laps for men, three cycles or one-and-a-half laps for women), then a jog across the street to the Southwest Baptist University track at the stadium for a four-lap run.
Upon completion of the distance run, the athletes jogged back to the front of Meyer Wellness and Sports Center where they began the bicycle race.
The bicycle race consisted of three laps around the Sells Administrative Center, making right turns at the Taylor National Free Enterprise Center and back onto Andersen Street, finishing at the crosswalk between the Bryant Tennis Center and Wheeler Science Center.
When the race started, it looked as if Plaster Lodge%s sophomore Bryce Blankenship was going to win.
Blankenship finished the swimming cycle a full 30 seconds ahead of the other male contestants, however, during the distance run, freshman and Gott Hall resident Micah Aubuchon decided he would not let Blankenship win that easily.
Aubuchon was the first athlete to complete the distance run and start his leg of the bicycle race. Ryan Williams, a sophomore representing Landen Hall was close behind.
Blankenship fought back from fifth place to win the honor of third place.
The results in the men%s race are as follows: the winner was Aubuchon with a time of 17:38, with second and third place winner%s Williams (17:53) and Blankenship (19:19), respectively. Maupin Hall resident senior Chaz Bell came in with a time of 19:38, just beating Landen junior Cory Rutledge%s time of 19:39. Senior Aaron Weaver%s, representing SBU Campus Apartments, time was 22:09, followed by Plastersophomore Nathan St. Clair%s 23:35 and senior Jaben Houk%s (Maupin) 25:09.
