Southwest Baptist University students, faculty and staff collected 453 survival kits for Hurricane Katrina victims in the Gulf Coast states of Louisiana and Mississippi. The donated kits...which included hand towels, wash clothes, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, tooth brushes and other items...were delivered to a Convoy of Hope depot in Springfield on Friday, Sept. 16.
A non-profit organization, Convoy provides resources to local organizations to help them meet the physical and spiritual needs of their communities.

According to SBU senior Brandy Slaughter, a Convoy volunteer service coordinator, over 350 semi-truck loads of food, water, hygiene survival kits, clothing and other items have been sent to the hurricane-affected areas. Slaughter says Convoy also has about 30 trucks on standby to help with potential victims of Hurricane Rita. Classified as a category five hurricane, Rita is expected to impact Texas and other parts of the Gulf Coast.
