The Importance of Patriotism

George Smith

Issue date: 10/24/02 Section: The Forum
For those of us who are not in the armed forces, be it voluntary or involuntary, there are still many ways to exhibit patriotism. Some simple ways include prominently displaying an American flag on your property or placing your hand over your heart while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The aforementioned embrace is also a very simple, yet meaningful patriotic gesture. The last way, but certainly not the least, is to register to vote and vote (either by absentee ballot or by going to the polls). A person who is really patriotic, caring about what happens to his or her country, should show concern by voicing his or her beliefs of what the country should be like.

To close, I would like to encourage every reader to vote in the upcoming Nov. 5 general election. Your vote is very important, and it does not matter what party you vote for. An important race is currently taking place in Missouri between Jim Talent and Jean Carnahan for the U.S. Senate, a race that could potentially decide the future course of the United States (at least for the next two years). If you cannot go to the polls in your hometown or have not sent in an application for an absentee ballot, you can still register to vote in Polk County. Let us not wait for another Sept. 11 to renew our patriotism. Show your support for the United States by casting your vote on Nov. 5.
