Contested races are here again

For four of the last seven years, the role of Student Body President at Southwest Baptist has gone uncontested. The faint interest students show toward leadership positions in the Student Government Association was rekindled last week when juniors Brian Verslues and Evan Johnson both created Facebook fan pages announcing their candidacies.

Chapel renovation fund raising begins

The last but most important item that Pres. C. Pat Taylor discussed at the faculty and staff forum Feb. 11 was the pending Chapel renovations. The Southwest Baptist University Board of Trustees voted to begin fund raising for the work. Pres. Taylor outlined four phases of fund raising that have to be completed.

Kenyan presents forgiveness film

Only about 500 miles separate Nairobi, Kenya, from Kigali, Rwanda. Hundreds of thousands to possibly a million people were killed in an act of genocide by the Hutu government of Rwanda in 1994. After moving to the U.S. from Kenya, photojournalist and documentary producer Patrick Mureithi, attended Missouri State University for a degree in Mass Media, graduating in 2001.

Games, prizes and cheap dates

The Bowling Ball, Fit to Be Tied game show and unconventional dates make this year's TWIRP (The Woman Is Required to Pay) week a week to remember. About 75 students came dressed up to the night of lunar bowling at the first Bowling Ball at Speedway Lanes from 7-9 p.

Another Senator opts out

Democrat Sen. Evan Bayh from Indiana announced Monday afternoon that he will not seek a third term in the Senate. This announcement comes as a significant blow to Democrats who are worried about losses in the midterm elections. Bayh was a governor for two terms before elected to the Senate in 1998.

Obama is no hero in Jakarta

Authorities in Indonesia removed a statue of U.S. President Barack Obama from a park in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. They moved the statue on Monday to the elementary school that the U.S. president attended as a child. The statue made of bronze was fashioned after a photograph of a 10 year-old Obama wearing shorts with a butterfly sitting on his outstretched thumb.

Doors open for business students

Institute of Management Accountants comes to SBU

March 2 marks the beginning of a new chapter for SBU's Business department. The Accounting department has applied to create a student charter of the Institution of Management Accountants. The chapter is officially recognized as the Southwest Baptist University Student Chapter of the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.

Graduate school and internship fair to be held March 5

Southwest Baptist University's Career Services is hosting a Graduate School and Internship Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, March 5, in McClelland Dining Facility located on SBU's Main Campus. Students and community members are invited to participate in the event.
