Apathy is a deadly emotion capable of tearing down any athletic team straight to the ground. We cannot escape the presence of apathy - it is all around us. Most will not even finish this column because of apathy. We simply do not care sometimes, or we lose the passion we once held for former objectives to new realities.
Albert Pujols, first basemen for the St.Louis Cardinals, was named a winner of the Silver Slugger Award Thursday, Nov. 5. The award is signified by a trophy presented to the top offensive player at each position in each league. Pujols was the only Redbird to win one, but pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina raked in Gold Glove awards earlier in the week, an award presented to the top defensive player at each position in each league.
Senior Bearcat Caitlin Tull was named to the All-MIAA Second Team in soccer, her fourth All-MIAA award in four seasons at SBU. Six other Bearcats were named All-MIAA Honorable Mention, including freshman goalkeeper Megan Link, freshman defender/forward Taylor Vick, senior defender Vanessa Roher, sophomore midfielder Kelly Isaac and junior Lindsey Boden, and junior forward Jaymye Ross.
The top-15 nationally ranked Southwest Baptist University men's cross country team will head to the National D-II cross country meet Saturday, Nov. 21 held in Evansville, Indiana. Following their near-dominant performance at the South Central Regional meet where the men grabbed second place, the team was propelled seven spots in the national rankings.
The women's volleyball team hosted back-to-back games, with a win on Nov. 13 over the Missouri Southern Lions and a loss on Nov. 14 against #21 Pittsburg State. SBU fought hard in two close sets before a 3-1 loss to Pitt. State. The first set was a back and forth battle which included 13 ties and 8 lead changes.
Chelsea Strahm, the daughter of Al and Debbie Strahm, is an important asset to Southwest Baptist University women's cross country and track team. The senior from St. Joseph started her track career in 9th grade. "I started cross country my junior year of high school to get in better for track," said Strahm.
Coming off a great start at the Disney East Coast Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, Fla., the #3 SBU Bearcats look to continue their winning ways with two more games this week after falling to Drury Monday, Nov. 16 99-86. The 'Cats will have their regular season home-opener on Thursday Nov.
