Pakistan steps up fight against Taliban

Pakistan's army is under- equipped to face thousands of Taliban extremists in the northwestern valley. Nevertheless, Pakistan is not discouraged from declaring that action will be taken against these extremists who have been terrorizing the nation by seizing towns, planting makeshift bombs made from pressure cookers and forcing children to be suicide bombers.

Demjanjuk charged with Nazi war crimes, deported to Germany

Demjanjuk, an 89 year-old Cleveland man, was deported to Germany on Monday to face charges as a war criminal in World War II. Demjanjuk has been accused of being an accessory to the death of 29,000 civilians at the death camp Sobibo in Poland. Charges have been raised again because research has accumulated that may dispute Demjanjuk's alibi.

Atlantis takes seven astronauts to repair Hubble after seven years

Space shuttle Atlantis took off from Cape Canaveral Monday on the last mission NASA will be sending to repair the 19 year-old Hubble Telescope. Seven astronauts blasted off at about 2 p.m. and arrived at the telescope Wednesday. The crew of seven will be replacing the batteries in the observatory and the gyroscopes that control what the telescope photographs.

Pope searches for acceptance from Jews and Muslims in Middle East

Pope Benedict XVI visited Israel's Mount Nebo on Saturday and called for "reconciliation of Christians and Jews." Benedict also expressed his support for a Palestinian nation independent from Israel to promote peace in the tense region. Benedict continues his travels to the Middle East to ease tensions between the Catholic church and the region.

Sitting means occasional exercise not enough

A study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that mortality rates of test subjects over a 20-year period increased with the amount of time per day they spent seated. Amway Global Wellness Index survey of more than 15,000 adults and found that Missouri is below the national average for daily exercise.

Student Government says happy finals

With this last issue of the update before the end of the semester, we hope you have a good finals week and a great summer. In this week's meeting, we had an energetic discussion regarding the student activity fee for next year. We are planning to find some more details and revisit the issue in our next meeting.

SGA budget allocation vote ruled unconstitutional

Southwest Baptist University Student Government Association will vote a second time on Monday, May 18 to approve the SGA Student Fee Allocation after the original SGA Student Fee Allocation vote of April 27 was ruled unconstitutional. SGA's Judicial Council of sophomore Stephanie Hoover, senior John Fuchs and freshman Dierra Blankenship, ruled May 11 that the original vote violated Article VI of the Constitution, which stipulates the budget "shall be posted in front of the SGA office at least one week before the time of approval.

Krystal Kerb's Miracle on Pike Street

Freshman Krystal Kerb narrowly escaped death last Friday. Kerb was in David Pulliam's 1994 Chevrolet Camaro in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center's parking lot when a tree was broken by the winds and fell onto the car, crushing the cab. "I parked his car there because it was raining so hard, it was raining too hard for me to see where I was going…The wind was blowing really hard, all the sudden I felt a bump on my head," said Kerb.

University hosts end-of-year events

Southwest Baptist University has several activities planned to mark the end of another semester. Monday marks the last day of classes before finals begin. Mellers Dining Commons will host a Late Night Study Break. The SBU Alumni Association will provide a "late night" snack for students Tuesday, May 19.

Gachette takes win, Madden Tournament and XBOX 360

Junior Steve Gachette won first place at Southwest Baptist's XBOX Madden 2009 tournament Wednesday, May 6. Gachette won a new XBOX 360, one extra controller and the game Madden 2009. The event was put on by SBU's Society of Veterans and managed by senior Brian Verslues.

Freshmen boost women's cross country

The Southwest Baptist University women's cross country team has quite a season ahead after placing third at the MIAA Conference Championships and finishing sixth at the regional meet. However, this year the team looks to be faster and stronger than ever before.

Koe takes Chapel as new Student Body President

Southwest Baptist University had its annual Turnover Chapel Monday as current members of Student Government Association gave authority to the new members of SGA. Chapel started with History professor Dr. James Smith receiving a pie in the face from Taylor Katz.
